Since beginning his painting career in the 1980’s as a “Postmodern Classicist,” John Griswold has drawn upon his training as an art conservator. He dissects classicist tropes, surrealistically recombining them using historical painting techniques. Inspired by Baroque mythological iconography, his film tableaux are models for his paintings, which are often layered back into the films.

With years of experience working with museums, he has published on art and architectural conservation, curated museum exhibitions and developed innovative treatment approaches. John holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from UC Irvine, and a Master’s in Art Conservation from Queen’s University.
