As a competitive swimmer Dana Christine Lewis continually finds new motivations through her experiences, including this new body of work that reflects her lifelong relationship with the ocean. She seeks to convey the atmosphere of refracted light underwater, as well as the language of anatomy and movement of the human figure. She often looks to express the spirit and futility of the figure as it fights against, or flows with the current. Her work perpetually drives her underwater exploration further out to the sea, as if the secret to human existence may lie somewhere below, out of reach. She hopes her works may inspire the viewer to do the same: to dive deeper and revise their own perception of the underwater world.
